A Great Cause – One Billion Rising #TUAMKEDAR
On Saturday, February 14, Dar es Salaam women and men, performers, celebrities and community members will gather at Coco Beach to take part in One Billion Rising, a global revolution to end violence against women and girls. Created by Eve Ensler’s V-Day movement, One Billion Rising has been endorsed by 13,000 groups and leaders across the globe from the Dalai Lama to Jane Fonda who have identified ending violence against women as a pivotal issue of our time. One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering United Nations statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime, which translates to one billion people. “One billion violated is an atrocity,” says onebillionrising.org. “But One Billion Rising is a revolution.”
We are incredibly proud to take part in such a important global movement since The ONE BILLION RISING effort is of great importance and relevance to Tanzania, as according to the 2010 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS), more than one-third (33%) of all women in Tanzania have suffered from physical violence at some point of their lives since the tender age of 15.
Please join us this Valentine’s Day as we walk out, dance, rise up and demand for an end to the global epidemic of abuse that women and girls face worldwide.
